How to Write a Cover Letter That Supports Your CV

A cover letter is not a repeat of your CV. It is a short message that explains why you are applying, why your background fits the role and what you want the employer to notice first. A strong cover letter connects your experience to the job instead of listing every detail again.

When Should You Send a Cover Letter?

Send a cover letter when the employer asks for one, when the role is competitive or when your background needs context. It is especially useful for career changers, recent graduates, candidates returning to work and applicants who want to explain a specific interest in the company.

Simple Cover Letter Structure

Opening: name the role and explain your reason for applying in one or two sentences. Avoid starting with a generic phrase that could be sent to any company.

Middle: choose two or three strengths that match the job description. Use evidence from your CV, such as customer service experience, technical projects, sales results, organization, leadership or training.

Closing: thank the employer, show interest in the next step and keep the tone professional. The closing should be confident without sounding demanding.

Example Opening Lines

  • I am applying for the Administrative Assistant position because my experience with scheduling, document preparation and customer communication matches the support your team needs.
  • I am interested in the Junior Web Developer role because I have built responsive front-end projects and enjoy turning interface requirements into clean, usable pages.
  • I would like to apply for the Customer Service Representative position because I have experience helping customers, resolving routine issues and keeping accurate records in busy environments.

Example Middle Paragraph

In my previous role, I supported daily operations by answering customer questions, updating records and coordinating requests with other team members. This helped me build strong communication habits and attention to detail. I am comfortable learning new systems quickly and staying organized when several tasks need to be handled at the same time.

Example Closing Paragraph

Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my experience and work habits could support your team. I have attached my CV and am available for an interview at your convenience.

Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sending the same letter to every employer without changing the role or company details.
  • Repeating the full CV instead of explaining the most relevant fit.
  • Using long paragraphs that are difficult to scan.
  • Making claims without examples.
  • Forgetting to proofread the company name, job title or contact details.

How Long Should It Be?

Most cover letters should be around three to five short paragraphs. One page is enough. Recruiters often read quickly, so a direct, specific and well-structured letter is more useful than a long essay.

How to Match It With Your CV

Your CV should contain the detailed facts. Your cover letter should point to the most important facts and explain why they matter for this role. If your CV lists five skills, your cover letter may focus on the two that are most relevant to the job description.

Write your CV first, then use the strongest parts of it to create a focused cover letter.
